| At the end of 1989 he
started playing bassguitar, in that year he formed the instrumental rocktrio
"Arabesque". This band recorded three demo's ("Pistache Express",
"Paragraph" and "Pathway To Ecstacy") and one CD released by the
german label "Shark records". This CD is called "Beyond The Veil". Besides playing bassguitar and chapman stick (chapman stick on "Pathway To Ecstacy", this demo is also with a female vocalist added to the band) he also wrote a lot of the music and some lyrics for this band. In 1993 he started playing in Lemur Voice (At that time the bandname
was Aura). In 1998 he recorded a solodemo on Chapman Stick. This demo is called "Sticks In Space. On this demotape Barend is focussing more on sphere and melody then on virtuosity. In 1997 barend also started to play in Darshan. In this band he
plays chapman stick only. Besides this instrument they use bassguitar, drums and a female
vocalist, and even some additional samples and keyboards. Because Darshan have a
bassguitarplayer Barend uses the chapman stick in a guitarlike way, the band does not have
a guitarist at all. The style of Darshan is very diverse with influences from King
Crimson, Björk, Porcupine Tree and even dance influences. Barend's most common musical influences are: Bass & Chapman Stick: Tony Levin, Trey Gunn, Mick Karn, Les
